Bet Hollis - Ned Hollis's wife, pulled out of the burning barn at Wending Mill along with a hired lad who had gone back in for the cow.
Captain Edda Rook - Commander of Fort Harrow: short grey hair, dented breastplate, clipped and dry. Has forty soldiers for a hundred and forty lanterns and no help from the Crown. Brannoc's old commanding officer, who calls him 'Bran'. Hired the party at ten crowns a week each.
Corporal Dunn - A Fort Harrow corporal who served with Brannoc and was glad to see him alive. Cuffed Ferrick for gossiping.
Father Tobin - Old priest of Aurelan at the Shrine of the Open Hand, who walks with a cane and raised Oriel. Found her as a baby at the foot of Lantern No. 1 on a frost night in 1022 and named her Oriel, 'golden'. Tells the story of Saint Wenna well, admits he doesn't understand half the scripture, and fusses over whether Oriel has eaten. Keeps the party's three dead lantern-cores on the shrine altar.
Ferrick - A young Fort Harrow soldier who repeated the sergeant's story that 'Bran Vow' is really an Ironvow, an exile out of Aldhammer.
Maddy Fenn - Innkeeper of the Crooked Kettle. Kept her promise of free board even though Lantern 37 is still dark, and wants to know who will see to Lantern 41.
Ned Hollis - The old miller of Wending Mill. Brought blankets and bread to the party after the fight and gave them his hearth for the night.
Pell - Ilsevel's brown owl familiar. Scouted ahead on the road south and spotted the goblins at the mill.
Rusk - The small goblin taken alive in the raid on Brindle Cross. Spent the night tied to the Crooked Kettle's rain barrel, then talked after Oriel fed him. Speaks in short, broken sentences and calls himself by name. Now kept in the Kettle's cellar with a blanket, asleep on Maddy's onions.
Sergeant Holt - Leads Fort Harrow's road patrol; brought in the goblin with the black-glass pendant.
Wil Fenn - Maddy's son. Brought the news that Lantern 41 had gone dark, and a letter a Fort Harrow rider left for 'Bran Vow'.
